This is the legendary jazz pianist’s concert performance, recorded in 1991 in a state-of-the-art digital audio and video production at the beautiful Paul Masson Winery. George Shearing’s artistry is now captured forever, as he and bass sensation Neil Swainson caress the ballads of Rodgers & Hart and Hoagy Carmichael, and swing to the bebop of Charlie Parker.

George Shearing is among the most popular and respected musicians of all time. His splendid “locked hands” technique, coupled with a tender touch, have made him one of the few pianists with a recognizable sound. An improviser with a flair for style and melodic elegance, many musicians have credited him with “opening up their ears to the beauties of tone”.

“Freedom Jazz Dance” is a jazz classic that was composed by a saxophonist Eddie Harris. The tune was popularized by Miles Davis in 1966. In this version, George Shearing and upright bassist Neil Swainson create an upbeat and bright rendition of the song.

The song “Why Did I Choose You? was written by Michael Leonard (music), and Herbert Martin (lyrics) for the Broadway musical ‘The Yearling’, which premiered December 10, 1965. It was popularized by Barbra Streisand (who recorded it that same year), and has since been frequently performed by jazz musicians in vocal and instrumental arrangements.

Estate (Summer) is an Italian song written in 1960 by Bruno Martino (music) and Bruno Brighetti (lyrics). It was a minor hit in Italy when released, but it eventually became a worldwide jazz standard, recorded by dozens of singers and jazz instrumentalists. “Lullaby of Birdland”, composed by George Shearing in 1952 as the theme song for the legendary Birdland night club, has become a standard of the jazz repertoire…his lasting legacy.
