Jazz Vocalist JD Walter’s Music submitted for GRAMMY® Consideration

Grammys 2023

Arkadia Artist JD Walter’s music has been submitted for GRAMMY® Consideration.

JD WALTER – WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW

This album of overlooked gems reveals JD Walter’s skills as a composer, his mastery of the intimate ballad, his talent for reinventing pop and jazz Standards to bring a new depth to these songs, and his ability to swing, scat, and harmonize like no one else. The album delivers a mix of three JD original compositions, reinterpretations of three pop hits, and four poignant romantic Jazz Standards. The implicit hope for this album is a plea for peace and love, as highlighted by the title song What the World Needs Now. Although the words seem quite simple as a pop hit, it took Hal David two years to complete them, given that the controversy of the Vietman War was an underlying meaning of the Hal David lyrics.

The Single Golden Lady showcases JD at his best, using unique scatting and powerful vocals for a deeply moving emotional experience. Here’s what JD says about the song: “Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s Stevie Wonder’s music was a gift that kept on Giving, and I especially wore out the album “Innervisions” which contained the song “Golden Lady”. So adapting this song to an up tempo swing feel and retaining its magic was the goal, and it’s such a joy to sing and swing.”

REVIEWS

“I mean, he scats like nobody else. Comparisons fail me. He plays with long tones like Betty Carter, takes risks like Kurt Elling, possesses a velvety smoothness like Mel Torme, investigates wordless ululations like Milton Nascimento, croons with the confident serenity of a Nat King Cole.”
– Bill Donaldson, Marge Hofacre, JAZZ NEWS

“Walter is reshaping what jazz singing is all about. He is an original in an art over-populated with copycats.”
– Nate Chinen, New York Times

“JD Walter beckons listeners into a soulful and captivating journey through modern jazz interpretations of non-jazz material. With his unique vocal stylings and innovative arrangements, he brings a fresh perspective to familiar popular tunes, and several jazz standards, while delivering thought-provoking original compositions. From the very first track—Stevie Wonder’s “Golden Lady”—it is evident that Walter’s vocal prowess is a force to be reckoned with. He dashes along in full flight and then effortlessly shifts into intricate scatting.”
